Randy and Jan invited us over for enchiladas tonight, so earlier today, when I stopped by Petaluma Market for a few necessities, I picked up a little something that caught my eye: The Vixen, a chocolate chili bock from Samuel Adams. An “Ale brewed with cinnamon and with spices and cocoa nibs added,” The Vixen sports an attention-grabbing label, featuring a lovely blonde, rose clenched in her teeth, eyebrow provocatively arched. Can’t resist a pinup. And the ingredients? Promising.

Everybody loves the Farmer’s Daughter. She’s one of those great stock characters of literature (and the subject of more than a few dirty jokes, usually involving a Traveling Salesman). Depending in the needs of the narrative, she can be plucky, optimistic, and naïve, or seductive, manipulative, and dangerous.

“Ooh, Lucky 13’s a blonde now,” was my thought as I grabbed this off the shelf at Petaluma Market. Only tonight, as I cracked it open, did I notice the “.alt”. Usenet flashback aside, I was confused. “But… She’s a blonde,” I said. Doesn’t “.alt” code dyeblack hair and tattoos? In any case, Lucky 13 .alt is a “specially brewed Hi-Gravity Auburn offering.” Still doesn’t make sense she’s a blonde, but what the heck…

Get ready to wet yer wolf whistle; this one’s a pinup! Lagunitas Lucky 13 pours copper, with a big, creamy head that marks the glass with cumulonimbus clouds. Bright and bold up front, piney hops and suggestions of citrus. Medium-bodied, with effervescent carbonation. Abrasive against palate, bourbon/molasses as it glides down the throat. Tart, slightly sour finish. A personal favorite.

A Little Sumpin’ Wild Ale

Sometimes you just need a little sumpin’ wild… Lagunitas A Little Sumpin’ Wild Ale is very citrus-y. Brighter and bigger than I remember Lagunitas’ Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’ and Little Sumpin’ Extra being. Nice and bitter. Enough carbonation to tickle the roof of the mouth. Mouthfeel somewhere between a wheat and an IPA. Notes of malt, tangerine, and grapefruit.

Decadent Evil

Got to like a beer with a pinup on the label. Valley Brewing’s Decadent Evil Belgian Style Golden Ale is tasty, indeed. Golden and effervescent, with little-to-no lacing on the glass. Notes of caramel and honey (more honey flavor than many meads I’ve had). All-in-all, an impressive California Belgian. And, at 9.5%, it’s certainly “decadent,” though its “evil” has yet to be proven.
